Federal NEH Grant Awarded to Archives & Special Collections

Xavier University of Louisiana Library's Archives & Special Collections department has been awarded a grant of $10,000 by the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) to support a Preservation & Environmental Assessment of the library's physical archival collections and rare books. The grant will provide funding for evaluation and training to assist with long-term preservation and environmental stabilization for the XULA Archives, which is located in a humid hurricane-prone region, by bringing in a LYRASIS consultant to assess and provide feedback on the extent of environmental damage to physical holdings. The consultant will work with the archives team to determine how building issues, collection storage and condition, and existing policies are impacting the safety and long-term sustainability of the collection.

Upon completion of the assessment, recommendations from the project team will include new preservation policy development, potential funding sources, and specific storage and preservation tips for both physical and electronic formats. NEH grant funds will also be used to purchase environmental monitoring equipment and preservation supplies suggested by the consultant. The award aids the Archives & Special Collections team in maintaining preservation standards that ensure each piece of history will live on to impact the lives of generations to come. Archivist and Digital Preservation Librarian Vincent Barraza will direct the project.
