Archives & Special Collections “Exhibits” in the Civic Center for Spring 2023

by University Library on 2022-12-03T14:56:00-06:00 in Archives, Art, News | 0 Comments

In an effort to continue honoring the legacies of New Orleans artist John T. Scott and Xavier University of Louisiana, archival items from the library's "I've Known Rivers" and student photo collections will occupy three display cases in the Civic Center. The Civic Center is located on the first floor of the library’s building and will make the exhibits available for viewing from December 2022 to May 2023. Curated by XULA Civic Center Social Justice and Arts Coordinator Sarah Singh, the installation was completed just in time for the closing reception for artwork of the late Scott’s son in the university’s art gallery.

Two display cases highlight the “I’ve Known Rivers” collection. Each showcase the work of former XULA art professor Dr. John T. Scott and collaborating artists’ work from the Afro-American Pavillion exhibit at the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans. Comprised of colorful architectural sketches and hand-written notes, the exhibit pays homage to the artists’ process to dream manifestation.

The third display case features a series of archival photos of past XULA students in different classes and environments around campus at work, rest, and in service to the community. They were selected based on their relationship to the themes of process, rest, reflection, and legacy at Xavier University of Louisiana.
