Borrowing From Other Libraries

There are two ways you can get access to content that is not available at our library: By using Interlibrary Loan to have items shipped to Xavier's Library for you to use or by visiting other area libraries.

If XULA's Library does not provide access to an article, chapter, or book, that item can be borrowed by the library on your behalf from another library. This process (called InterLibrary Loan [ILL] ) can provide you with a print or electronic copy of the item within a few days or weeks. To request an item via ILL you will need to complete the Interlibrary Loan Request Form.

Directly from Other Libraries

As a Xavierite, you have borrowing privileges at other college libraries in the New Orleans area! Through our participation in CALL (the Council on Academic Libraries Liaison - a consortium of libraries in New Orleans) you may visit and borrow books directly from the libraries listed below. This can be helpful since you can get an item held in these libraries much faster by visiting them directly.

New Orleans Public Library

New Orleans Public Library has a rich online library including ebooks, audiobooks, music, movies, and television all for FREE. If you are an Orleans Parish resident (on or off campus) you can get free admission to certain attractions with the Culture Pass. The closest New Orleans Public Library to Xavier's campus is the Mid-City Library at 4140 Canal St, New Orleans, LA 70119, but cardholders can request materials be sent to the Mid-City branch from any location.

Getting a Card

  • Orleans Parish (on or off campus) residents need to bring their current state ID (Louisiana or not) and a piece of mail addressed to you at your Orleans Parish address.
  • Jefferson or St. Bernard Parish residents need to bring their active Jefferson or St. Bernard library card to any New Orleans Public Library to receive a New Orleans Public Library card.
  • If you're not sure, you can read more about getting a library card at the New Orleans Public Library.
