Finding Books @ Xavier

How to find Books

The library has books available both online (eBooks) and in print on the shelves. You can use Library Search for both types; enter your keywords search, and under "Tweak Your Results" choose "Resource Types" and "Books."

> Advanced Search

Where to get Books

  • eBooks are linked from the record in the library's catalog
  • Print books are located on the upper floors of the library and are arranged by call number (ex. HQ535 .C416 2010)

About Call Numbers

Books at the library are arranged according to the Library of Congress call number system. A "call number" is like an address for the book that tells you the location on the shelf in relation to other books. They are arranged alphabetically and numerically, and grouped by subject class and subclass. This table explains the parts of the example call number PS3573 .H4768 H37 2021 for the book Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead.

Call Number Portion Meaning
PS3573 A subclass for American Literary works by individual authors whose last name starts with the letter W and were born between the years 1961 and 2000.
.H4768 Represents the individual author Colson Whitehead; numbers are read as a decimal: point four seven six eight, NOT four-thousand seven hundred and sixty-eight
H37 Represent the title of the work by the author; numbers are still read as decimal: point three seven
2021 The year the book was published
