Introduction to Chicago Style

Chicago Style can be one of the more confusing formatting and citation styles because there are several different versions. Let's clear up some of the confusion. That way you know which page on the guide to refer to.

The Chicago Manual of Style is a formatting and citation style published by the University of Chicago Press, and it is used predominantly by the humanities and social sciences. It has two systems for citation, including the Notes & Bibliography System and the Author-Date System. Be sure to review your syllabus and Brightspace materials or ask your professor to determine which system they want you to use.

You may also see the term Turabian. This refers to a version of Chicago Style specifically for students verses those submitting a work for publication. The name comes from the author, Kate L. Turabian, who wrote A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, which is also published by the University of Chicago Press. The Turabian version of Chicago Style is the one used in this guide
