Medical Laboratory Science: Highlighted Resources

📗 Clinical Chemistry

Clinical Chemistry considers what happens to the body's chemistry when affected by disease. It provides introductory coverage of the scientific basis for biochemistry tests routinely used in medicine - including tests for the assessment of organ function, diagnosis and monitoring disease activity and therapy efficacy.

📗 Tietz Textbook of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics

Bridging the gap between the clinical laboratory and medical management by relating pathophysiology to analytical results in health and disease, this classic resource provides the guidance necessary to select, perform, and evaluate the results of new and established laboratory tests.

🔗 Clinical Laboratory Science Journal

CLS is an online journal published quarterly and features articles on the very latest in research, education, and government actions affecting clinical laboratory science professionals and their integration and impact on the healthcare system

📗Clinical Immunology & Serology

Each chapter in this text is a complete learning module containing theoretical principles, illustrations, definitions of relevant terminology, and procedures for simulated clinical testing. The text combines essential theoretical principles with serological techniques commonly used in the clinical laboratory.

Search Strategies for Medical Laboratory Science

Asterisk: *

An asterisk ( Shift+8 to get *) after a series of letters tells the search to provide results that match the letters you typed along with any word ending as long as it is part of the same word. Keep in mind that this may not always work the way you expect! Applications for this could be:

Base plus * Sample of Possible matches
hemolys* hemolysis, hemolytic, hemolysin
microbiol* microbiology, microbiological, microbiologist
leukocyt* leukocyte, leukocytosis, leukocytopenia

Quotation Marks: "____"

Placing quotes around two or more words tells the search to provide results with those words in that exact order with only one space between them. This is especially helpful when words have meanings separately that are changed when combined or are given a more specific meaning when used in conjunction. Some examples are:

  • "complete blood count" → Finds results specifically about complete blood count, rather than separate mentions of "complete," "blood," and "count."
  • "polymerase chain reaction" → Ensures results focus on PCR as a method rather than unrelated uses of "polymerase," "chain," or "reaction."

OR

The word "or" means something very different to databases, and might be helpful when searching for similar concepts that either don't all start with the same letters or has too many irrelevant matches.

Instead of just... Try...
bacteria bacteria OR microbes OR microorganisms
"blood test" "blood test" OR "diagnostic assay" OR "clinical laboratory test"
"liver enzymes" "liver enzymes" OR "hepatic biomarkers" OR "ALT AST levels"

AND

The word "AND" helps narrow your search by requiring that all specified terms appear in the results. This is useful when you need to find articles or data that include multiple key concepts together.

Examples:

Instead of just… Try… Why?
hemoglobin hemoglobin AND anemia Ensures results discuss hemoglobin in relation to anemia, not just hemoglobin in general.
blood culture blood culture AND sepsis Retrieves articles specifically about blood cultures and their role in sepsis diagnosis.
PCR PCR AND viral load Focuses on studies that discuss PCR in the context of measuring viral load.
hematology hematology AND "reference ranges" Narrows results to articles discussing reference ranges within hematology.
