Photograph of Margaret Murray Washington, Wife of Booker T. WashingtonThis photograph of Margaret Murray Washington (an activist and the third wife of Booker T. Washington) was featured last year in an exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., entitled Votes For Women: A Portrait Of Persistence. The exhibit focused on the path to women’s suffrage in the United States, covering over eighty years of events, and ran from March 2019 to January 2020.

While the original photograph was returned to the Archives and Special Collections earlier this year, we’re excited to announce that the image will be featured in a traveling poster exhibit for Votes For Women: A Portrait Of Persistence, sponsored by the Smithsonian. Museums, libraries, schools, and educators will be able to request a copy of the poster for display. Another post with more information about the exhibit will be made closer to its official launch, so check the Library's blog often!

The portrait of Margaret Murray Washington can be found in the Archives Photographs Collection, available through our Digital Archives.
