WEIRD humans

When reading psychological and behavioral science research, we expect that the researcher has applied the correct sampling techniques to select participants in their study. In practice, however, the majority of participants are American undergraduates who share a common cultural background: western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD). There is growing evidence that basic cognitive and motivational processes vary across populations. American undergraduates are far less representative of the global human population than researchers would lead us to believe.
