This summer we will extend best wishes to Mr. Irwin Lachoff, Associate Archivist, historian, colleague, and friend as he retires from Xavier’s Archives & Special Collections. Mr. Lachoff has been an asset to the University Library since he was first hired in March of 1997.
With a background in history and a keen interest in New Orleans, Mr. Lachoff made his mark as a preservationist of Xavier’s unique collection of documents, university records, photographs, ephemera, and rare books. “The index is in his brain” faculty often commented when confronted with his determination to help them access archival collections. Researchers from across the country have acknowledged him in their publications and continued to visit him “just to say hello” long after their research was finished.
Mr. Lachoff served his profession through presentations, lectures, and book publications including The Jewish Community of New Orleans and Jews of New Orleans: An Archival Guide. In addition, he mentored students eager to join the archival profession.
Mr. Lachoff wishes to thank everyone in the Xavier community who made his time here productive and enjoyable. He also hopes that every researcher that visited the Archives felt that he treated them with courtesy and respect, and that they left the Archives feeling he had assisted them in their research to the best of his ability.
Everyone at Xavier University of Louisiana wishes Irwin Lachoff happy days in retirement and the best life. He will be missed and always thought of fondly.
Mrs. Mary George has been an asset at Xavier’s library since she began as a Research Assistant in January 1996. Since then, Mrs. George served as a cataloger, Head of Metadata Management, and Institutional Repository and Instruction & Liaison Librarian. Mrs. George worked tirelessly to ensure access to research at Xavier through the institutional repository and oversaw the Innovation Studio, Xavier’s MakerSpace.
With a background in Chemistry and a desire to facilitate learning, Mrs. George has provided research consultations and instruction to Xavier Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Science students. Mr. George served her profession through presentations, publications, lectures, and by working with Xavier faculty, students and staff.
Mrs. George shared her knowledge in the Innovation Studio, teaching students to utilize Makerspace tools including the 3-D printers, and teaching students to sew during sewing workshops. Mrs. George’s kind spirit and desire to serve has made her a pleasure to work with and an asset to the Xavier community.
Mrs. George says that "Working for almost 25 years at the library has been a rich and rewarding experience. I will miss the interaction with the bright students, the hard-working faculty, and colleagues. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with a dedicated and talented group of people, in order to promote the vision and purpose of the university and the library."
Everyone at the Xavier University of Louisiana wishes Mary George a joyful retirement and she will be greatly missed.
